SAFERS Project: Recap of the third demonstration in El Perelló, Catalonia

The Pau Costa Foundation (PCF) hosted the Spanish demonstration of the SAFERS European project in El Perelló, Catalonia, from October 9 to 11, 2023.

Day 1 - 09/10: Exploring the Aftermath

The participants had the opportunity to visit the burned area from the 2019 fire, providing valuable insights into the long-term impact of forest fires on the environment and communities.

Day 2 - 10/10: Unleashing the Power of the Third Demo

The highlight of the event was the third #demo, where firefighters showcased their skills and the SAFERS Intelligent Services (beta version). This included a range of services such as a Chatbot for citizens and volunteers, weather forecasting, early warnings, and cutting-edge fire detection systems. Local Forest Defense Volunteers (ADF) and Enervent S.L. played crucial roles in supporting and executing this impactful demonstration. The event brought together technical entities, first responders, local authorities, and engaged citizens. This collaborative effort marked the third of four project demos, with previous showcases in Corsica, France (October 2022), and Piedmont, Italy (February 2023). The SAFERS project actively contributes to advancing wildfire management and resilience efforts.

Day 3 - 11/10: General Assembly Meeting

The event concluded with a General Assembly meeting of the project gathering all the partners to discuss SAFERS progress as well as the future steps of the project. SAFERS team had also the pleasure to collect feedback from the members of the advisory board regarding SAFERS integrated platform and shred technical and operational recommendations. The advisory board members was composed of Mr. Fabio Silva (Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Proteção Civil), Mr. Emmanuel Pajot (European Association of Remote Sensing Companies), Mr. Jorge Gomes (VOST Portugal) and Mr. Pere Rebull (Forest Defence Volunteers) and proposed some insightful exploitation ideas to promote the Marketing strategy of SAFERS.

SAFERS aims to enhance wildfire risk management through the evaluation of innovative services in a controlled, realistic environment using historical data. The project is a joint effort supported by local communities and organizations, with the final demonstration set for December 2023 in Spain and Greece.
